A lot of the trans people I met online are interested in tech in some way or other but it’s a biased sample because I’m also (kinda) into tech and tend to hang out in such spaces.
It’s not an European thing. It’s an awful statistics thing.
People see a lot more trans people on the internet than IRL. Places on the internet usually have big programming spaces. Therefore the place where ppl see more trans ppl is in programming spaces. So now they think that most trans ppl are programmers. After that, they conclude that most trans ppl are programmers. Add to it the snowball effect of memes and now you have a huge misconception about reality.
I’ve been in the industry a while too and in multiple countries in Europe. Before COVID there were even some visits to tech conferences. Only once did I meet a trans person (or so I think, they never corrected anybody on the pronouns).
This seems to be an internet thing, or at least the loud minority thing, but maybe I’m also just a recluse 🤷
I’m a software dev in Europe for over 20 years, worked in different European countries, had loads of male, female, gay and lesbian colleagues. Zero transes.
I regularly wear an autistic trans nonbinary pin on my lapel, have they/them pronouns and a big corporate pride flag graphic in my work email signature, and A-cup tits that I often pad out to a B-cup, but every non-queer person at work still just assumes I’m a guy because I have a flamboyant moustache. XD
I’ve been involved in the BDSM community for roughly 15 years in the US. Tons of LGBT people, and I can say a large percentage are into IT either professionally or as a hobby. As for trans specifically, I’m not sure I’ve ever met one who wasn’t technically minded.
That’s just what I’ve seen. Could be different elsewhere.
It’s less so the wider tech-industry, as in corporate big tech. But the general open-source community and hacker spaces in particular have a lot of trans and other queer people in it
I have met one trans developer in the last 35 plus years, and I have worked at a lot of different places. I am based in the Midwestern US.

Never met a trans person working in IT but ive seen a lot of them on Lemmy and Mastadon.
So I think its just a social media thing. The ones that exist are very active and cares deeply about being visible online.
Lemmy is tech-minded, there are safe spaces for trans people. You can basically do the math.
Clearly this means that you have to take up the mantle as the trans developer
